The sins of the father

Summary: Only days before Britain declares war on Germany, Harry Clifton, hoping to escape the consequences of long-buried family secrets, and forced to accept that his desire to marry Emma Barrington will never be fulfilled, has joined the Merchant Navy. But his ship is sunk in the Atlantic by a German U-boat, drowning almost the entire crew. An American cruise liner, the SS Kansas Star, rescues a handful of sailors, among them Harry and the third officer, an American named Tom Bradshaw. When Bradshaw dies in the night, Harry seizes on the chance to escape his tangled past and assumes his identity. But on landing in America, he quickly learns the mistake he has made, when he discovers what is awaiting Bradshaw in New York. Without any way of proving his true identity, Harry Clifton is now chained to a past that could be far worse than the one he had hoped to escape.

Dual narrators read this sequel to Only Time Will Tell (2011). The story begins in 1939, with Englishman Harry Clifton assuming the identity of an American. Emma Barrington, Harry's lover and the mother of his child, leaves England to find Harry, who she believes is in the U.S. British actor Jennings voices Harry in a proper British accent and does a credible job with American characters, including gruff prison guards, a well-educated warden, and Harry's Irish American cell mate. Fox's tones reveal Emma's dogged determination to find Harry, and her changing vocal inflections reflect Harry's stubborn mother and Emma's gravelly voiced grandfather. The plot and unfolding narrative may initially be a bit confusing for listeners new to the series, but dual readers help listeners sort out the characters. A good choice for Archer fans and others who enjoy family sagas. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
  • Publishers Weekly Reviews : PW Reviews 2012 August #3

This latest installment in Archer's Clifton Chronicles series follows the multiple trials, tribulations, and sometime triumphs of working class Englishman Harry Clifton, his lady love Emma Barrington, and their numerous respective family members as they struggle, fight, and love their way across three continents during World War II. The tale is told from the point of view of several characters, and Alex Jennings and Emilia Fox provide narration that ably captures those characters, and render myriad voices and international accents--everything from from New York City cabbies to German officers and the stiff-upper-lipped British aristocrats. Fox particularly shines in chapters recounting the adventures of the stalwart Emma, who sets out on a mission to learn the fate of her lover that takes her from the comfort of her English homeland to the wilds of New York City. Fox skillfully brings this plucky, never say die character to life in this fast, entertaining summer listen, perfect for long drives or relaxing days in the sun. A St. Martin's hardcover. (May)
