Forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan has a puzzle on her hands. A man has drowned under suspicious circumstances. His fingerprints identify him immediately, but here's the thing: the man apparently died more than 40 years ago. And if this is really him, then who is buried in his grave? The thirteenth Brennan novel is fairly typical of the series: a tightly plotted tale with engaging characters whose personal lives can be at least as interesting as the cases they're investigating. Reading a new Brennan novel is like hooking up with old friends: you know what to expect, but that's OK, because you also know you'll have a good time. Reichs, a former forensic anthropologist herself, whose early books were occasionally a bit clunky (it's not a smooth transition, apparently, from deconstructing bones to constructing sentences), has developed into a solid writer. Fans of the television series Bones, based on Reich's life and career, will note plenty of differences between the show and the novels, but they will find that Brennan on the page still offers much to enjoy. Fans of the books, of course, will soon be stampeding to the library to secure their copies. So stock up. Copyright 2009 Booklist Reviews. - Kirkus Reviews : Kirkus Reviews 2010 July #1
Temperance Brennan follows the tangled path of a drowning victim who's evidently been dead and buried for over 50 years.
John Charles Lowery, of Lumberton, N.C., died in Vietnam in 1968. So how can fingerprint evidence identify him as the man who died of autoerotic asphyxia in a pond outside Hemmingford, Quebec? Luckily for him, Lowery, aka Spider, has attracted the attention of Temperance, who has roots in both Quebec, where she works as a forensic anthropologist, and North Carolina, where she grew up. Even more luckily, Tempe (206 Bones, 2009, etc.) so charms Spider's grieving father, Plato, that he insists she accompany the remains to the Central Identification Laboratory in Honolulu to establish once and for all what became of his son. No sooner has Tempe arrived in the islands with her daughter Katy, whose aid-worker boyfriend has just been killed by a roadside bomb outside Kabul, than flamboyant Honolulu Chief Medical Examiner Hadley Perry summons her to another command performance, the identification of some leftover bones that are all that remain from a recent shark attack. Both victims seem to be members of the Sons of Samoa, a gang of enforcers connected to local crime lord Nickie Lapasa, whose brother went missing in Vietnam in 1968âand perhaps to Spider Lowery as well.
Enough forensic examinations, misidentifications, genetic anomalies and coincidences for a whole season of snappy Tempe's TVÃÂ adventures. The biggest surprise is that all the corpses are indeed tied together, though only the faithful will care just how.

When Temperance Brennan is asked to investigate a drowning death in Quebec, she discovers that the victim supposedly died in Vietnam in 1968. So whose remains are in his grave? And why are his dog tags tangled up with yet another set of newly discovered remains? Obviously huge-note that Reichs also produces Bones, the Fox TV hit now in its fifth season-so why just a five-city tour? She must be busy. In this tepid series entry (after 206 Bones), forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan finds herself immersed in a bizarre case of mistaken identity. A body is pulled from a small pond near Montreal, the victim of an underwater autoerotic experiment gone awry. Even more troubling is the man's identity: John Charles Lowery was supposed to have died in 1968 after a fiery helicopter crash in Vietnam. But if this man is Lowery, who was buried in his place four decades ago? This latest puzzle will lead Temperance to the Central Identification Laboratory in Hawaii, where her persistent questions will place her life, and those she loves, in mortal danger. VERDICT Despite the lush tropical setting and fascinating premise, this title is too convoluted and contrived to be truly enjoyable. And the once sizzling chemistry between Temperance and Det. Andrew Ryan has vanished, replaced by a tiresome, wisecracking repartee. For extremely loyal Reichs fans only; others new to the series may want to search out her superior earlier titles instead. A perplexing death in Quebec occupies Dr. Temperance Brennan in Reichs's fine 13th novel featuring the forensic anthropologist (after 206 Bones). The fingerprints of a man who died during autoerotic asphyxiation indicate that the deceased is John Charles Lowery of North Carolina, but Lowery supposedly died in Vietnam in 1968. Unsurprisingly, Lowery's father is reluctant to allow Brennan to reopen old family wounds, but she's determined to find out who's buried in Lowery's grave if Lowery died in Quebec. Brennan heads to Hawaii to seek the help of an old friend at the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), whose mission is to find the remains of American war dead and bring them home. But instead of clarifying matters, Brennan's investigation only raises more questions, including parallel inquiries into a series of shark attacks and escalating island gang violence. Reichs, who once again uses her own scientific knowledge to enhance a complex plot and continually developing characters, delivers a whopper of a final twist. (Aug.)
